The History of Lalibela
Lalibela’s story dates back to the 12th century, when King Lalibela set out to create a “New Jerusalem” carved entirely from rock. These churches, hewn from solid stone, represent an extraordinary feat of faith and engineering. Built as a refuge during times of religious turmoil, Lalibela became a spiritual center for Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. The city’s ancient sites still echo with the prayers and legends of saints, angels, and devoted pilgrims who have walked its sacred paths for centuries.Founded over 1,000 years ago, Harar has stood as a spiritual, cultural, and commercial center in East Africa. Once a key hub along ancient trade routes linking Africa to Arabia, Harar flourished with merchants, scholars, and artisans. Its formidable city walls, built in the 16th century by Emir Nur, still guard the old town — a labyrinth of narrow streets, bustling markets, and centuries-old mosques. Today, Harar remains a living museum of tolerance, faith, and history.
